Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, in which the young American colonies declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1776. The young American Congress approved the declaration on July 4 after several revisions. See
