The U.S. Army was officially formed on 14 June 1775 by a secret resolution of the Continental Congress to aid the fight for independence for the 13 colonies that shortly thereafter became the original United States of America. George Washington was chosen the next day as general and Commander in Chief. His instructions were to take charge of the armed of the united colonies and to capture or destroy all armed enemies.
