I worked with Carrie’s mother Paula when Carrie was killed in Iraq. I gave her this poem by Robert Frost changing the first word from He to She. Frost wrote this poem for his friend and fellow poet Edward Thomas who was killed in WWI in the Battle of Arras in 1917. I felt it was a fitting memorial for Carrie and for all the comrades we have lost, noting that their stories do not end where they have fallen as long as we live to remember and honor them.

 Why join the DAV

Imagine a nation where veterans returned from war without the ben­efits we enjoy today. Imagine disabled veterans having to endure every hard­ship on their own, without the hope of being able to support their families.

 

For the majority of sick and injured veterans of World War I, the fight for life that began on the battlefield had really only begun when they returned home. But they had each other. And that was enough.

 

Before there was a VA health care system, reintegration counseling or vocational rehabilitation, they came together to form the Disabled Ameri­can Veterans. What DAV members have learned over the better part of a century, is that the fight for fair treatment for veterans was one that had to be fought for by every generation that served and sacrificed.

 

When you signal your intent to become a member of the DAV, you stand with every veteran who faces an uncertain future as a result of war­time service-connected disabilities.

 

What the future will hold for the gen­eration of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan is uncertain. What challenges future veterans will face as a result of their service is unknown.

 

But when you join the DAV and stand up with your fellow veterans, you make it clear that you will con­tinue the fight to ensure the nation lives up to its obligations for its fighting men and women.
