Thank you for reaching out to me regarding S. 1975, the Discharge Review Board Accountability Act of 2023. I appreciate hearing from you about this legislation.
On June 14, 2023, S.1975 was introduced in the Senate and referred to the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, of which I am not a member. This bill would direct the Government Accountability Office to conduct a study and report back to Congress on recommendations to ensure fair consideration for veterans who had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), military sexual trauma (MST), or other mental health conditions connected to their military service.
I have always felt a deep gratitude for those Americans willing to stand up and defend our country. Our servicemen and women risk their lives for the sake of what they know, and we know, to be bigger—the survival of the United States of America and the freedoms it secures for its citizens. The importance of upholding the integrity of the discharge process is vital, as it is the duty of the United States government to take care of those serving in the military and as they leave their service.
While I am not a member of the Committee on Veteran Affairs, where S. 1975 will first be considered, rest assured that I will keep your comments in mind should it or any legislation aimed at improving veterans' access to health care come before the Senate for consideration.
