Dear Mr. Parker,            Thank you for contacting me regarding the Improving Whole Health for Veterans with Chronic Conditions Act.  I appreciate hearing from you on this issue.            On June 13, 2023, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) introduced S. 1

Body

Dear Mr. Parker, Thank you for contacting me regarding the Improving Whole Health for Veterans with Chronic Conditions Act. I appreciate hearing from you on this issue. On June 13, 2023, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) introduced S. 1954, the Improving Whole Health for Veterans with Chronic Conditions Act. This bill would direct the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to launch a four-year pilot program that would provide dental care to veterans who are eligible for VA health benefits, who are not currently eligible for dental care and related services, and have a diagnosis of type 1 or type 2 diabetes or ischemic heart disease. Upon completion of the pilot program, the VA would submit a report on the results of the pilot program that would include: a description of the implementation of the program; the number of covered veterans who received care under the program; an analysis of the costs and benefits of care provided by the program; an assessment of the impact of the program on appointments and perceived quality of life of covered veterans; an assessment of the efficacy of mobile clinics, portable dental care units, dental therapists, and tele-dentistry for covered veterans; and a recommendation for the expansion of dental care to all veterans eligible for health care from the VA. Finally, this bill would direct the VA to offer a student loan repayment program to qualified dentists, dental hygienists, and oral surgeons who agree to participate in the pilot program. Currently, S. 928 awaits consideration by the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, of which I am not a member. Having served in the Navy and as a Marine Corps officer, I understand the importance of providing all of our nation’s veterans with the care and benefits they have earned and deserve. It is our duty as lawmakers to ensure those who have defended our freedoms receive the best care our country can provide, regardless of political dynamics in Washington. Please be assured, I will keep your thoughts in mind should this or related legislation come before the full Senate for consideration. Again, thank you for contacting me. It is an honor to represent you in the United States Senate. Sincerely, Todd Young United States Senator
