Planned VA facility pits neighbors against veterans in San Diego

Debate about a proposed veterans facility geared for those with post-traumatic stress disorder and mild traumatic brain injury has pitted neighbors against veterans in San Diego over whether the historic Old Town neighborhood is the right place for the veterans center.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is planning five such centers around the country.

According to The Sacramento Bee, neighborhood residents oppose the facility because it would be located across from an elementary school and because the area isn't zoned for such use.

The proposed facility would have 40 beds and would aim to provide temporary housing for honorably discharged veterans for an average of 60 to 120 days, the VA San Diego Healthcare System told the Bee. The VA was surprised by the negative reaction and has formed an advisory committee of neighborhood residents and business owners to solicit feedback.
