Gulf War Illness Issues
These are the "ramblingz" of a retired member of the armed forces, a veteran of war, a father, husband, son, brother and many other titles. This Blog is written to question, inform, inspire and encourage all of us into action!

NAMI Veterans Council (NVC)
The NAMI Veterans Council (NVC) is a leadership body of NAMI members assembled to advise the NAMI National Board of Directors on issues relating to veterans and their families. There are currently approximately 275 council members.

The NVC exists to give input to the NAMI Board of Directors through the Veterans Committee and to ensure close attention to veterans' mental health issues not only at the national level, but also within each Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN). Additionally, NVC members engage with NAMI national and state organization leadership to support and enhance education and advocacy activities.

Voting members of the NVC include state NVC representatives, appointed by NAMI state organization leadership, VISN representatives, and elected officers of the NVC.  Together, the NVC members advocate for an improved continuum of care for veterans, active military, family members, and friends who have a serious mental illness. Members of the NVC often work in cooperation with NAMI state and local leaders. Other NAMI members may belong to the NVC network and engage in support of NVC activities.

Research Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans' Illnesses
The Research Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans' Illnesses was created by Congress in 1998, and first appointed by Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi in January, 2002.  The mission of the Committee is to make recommendations to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs on government research relating to the health consequences of military service in the Southwest Asia theater of operations during the Persian Gulf War.

According to its charter, the guiding principle for the work of the Committee shall be the premise that the fundamental goal of Gulf War-related government research is to improve the health of ill Gulf War veterans.   Research priorities will be judged against this standard.

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Veterans Resource Center
Welcome

NAMI is proud to provide the following resources for everyone touched by military service. The people who are currently serving, those who have served and their families face unique stressos and need mental health information and treatment tailored to their needs. And yet, the mental health challenges faced by veterans, active-duty troops and their families—stigma, access to quality health information and innovative new treatments—are on the minds of military families and the rest of NAMI's families.

Recent studies tell us that nearly a third of veterans who seek care through Veterans Administration (VA) health centers receive mental health diagnoses. With more and more soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with mental health concerns, NAMI recognizes the need for increased services for veterans and their families. Our Veterans Resources Center consolidates the most useful online resources, whether you are looking for information on Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, mental illness or how to obtain Veterans Administration (VA) benefits.

Do you know of a resource that doesn't appear in the Veterans Resource Center? Send your news articles, videos, personal stories and links to veterans' organizations and services to vets@nami.org.

National Alliance on Mental Illness North Carolina
The mission of NAMI North Carolina is to promote recovery and optimize the quality of life for those living with mental illness.
We are part of  NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) which has over 210,000 members in 1,200 affiliates across the country.   NAMI NC is a non profit organization, governed by a volunteer board of directors.

The NAMI movement focuses specifically upon those mental illnesses that are brain disorders. These are serious illnesses that can affect a person’s ability to think, feel and relate to other people and the environment.

For adults, serious mental illnesses include schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder (manic depression), obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and other brain disorders. For children, the list of serious emotional disturbances includes the above illnesses, plus attention  deficit disorder, autism, and pervasive developmental disorder.

Membership in the nearly forty affiliates in North Carolina consists  of family members of people who live with mental illness, individuals who live with mental illness, friends, and professionals. Affiliates typically have monthly support meetings/or educational and business meetings. When mental illness strikes, it is usually surrounded by confusion and isolation. Support groups can provide an opportunity to talk with other people who have “been there” and who understand what you are facing. General meetings have speakers on issues important to members.

NAMI NC is governed by a  volunteer Board of Directors elected by the membership.

Social Security Disability Benefits For Wounded Warriors
Military service members can receive expedited processing of disability claims from Social Security. Benefits available through Social Security are different than those from the Department of Veterans Affairs and require a separate application.

The expedited process is used for military service members who become disabled while on active military service on or after October 1, 2001, regardless of where the disability occurs.

The following questions link to answers to questions most people ask about applying for disability benefits. Knowing the answers to these questions will help you understand the process.

Welcome to the City of Henderson
Downtown Henderson

Located 40 minutes north of the capital city of Raleigh, Henderson, North Carolina is a rural town rich with history.

The first settlers’ residence was built in what is now Henderson in 1785 by Samuel Reavis, Sr. Reavis called his farm “Lonesome Valley” which likely described the area at that time. Reavis’ son, Lewis Reavis, opened a store close to the stagecoach road in 1811 where he began to see an influx of settlers and the awakening of a city.
