U.S. Veterans who helped in the liberation of France during WWII may be eligible to receive the French Legion of Honor, a medal previously issued only to WWI veterans. The French government has asked the Secretary of the VA for assistance in identifying qualified American veterans for consideration to receive the medal. Applications are reviewed by a committee in Paris, and French consulates in the U.S. are charged with distributing approximately 100 medals annually. Members of the Army Air Corps, Navy and Coast Guard who participated in one of the four major campaigns in the liberation of France (Normandy, Southern France, Northern France and the Ardennes) are eligible.
Applicants must have documentation such as a DD-214 or other official forms.
Copies only should be sent to the following address with a request for consideration for the Legion of Honor to Defense Attache,
