 Commander's Comments

I just got back from the DAV national at Denver. I am proud to announce that Lorren Davis is the primary and Mike Smith is the alternate 19th District National Executive Committee (NEC). Not only did Lorren become the 19th Dist NEC he also was appointed by National Adjutant Wilson as one of two National Directors for the NEC.

Congratulations go out to Barbara Redding who was elected as DAV Auxiliary 19th Dist Committeewoman.

Thanks to everyone who attended the Convention. We had a very good turn out from Idaho.

This is just a note on highlights I wanted to send out.

 Adjutant's Announcements

FROM THE DESK of the DEPARTMENT ADJUTANT:

Greetings!  I have just returned from the National Convention and there are    a few things that I need to remind you about.  It was great to attend the Convention,  but is so good to be home.  We had great speakers and several put out needed information.  To begin with, don’t forget to submit your 990N forms for non-profit organizations.  They told us three years ago that we didn’t have to worry, that we had three years before it became mandatory.  Well this is year three and it is a must.  Consequences are you can use your EIN (This would mean the hassel of reapplying), losing your charter and the problem of reapplying for a new charter.  So Finance people be aware of the need to submit this form.  It can be done on the internet if you did not make over $25,000 excluding per capita.  If you have questions contact the IRS.

Next, remember that Officer Reports are due to me and National Headquarters 10 days after a change occurs.  We have a few chapters who are late on this, so please, Please get the forms in.

Finance Reports -  Due to National not later than Sep 30th.   They are due to National if you have more than $10,000 in your account. However all Chapters must MUST have their finance report on file with the Adjutant not later than that date.

If your chapter wishes to have a fund raiser that entails community involvement, you must request approval from the Department (and have the approval in hand) before any publicity can be issued.  If you are not going to involve any outside entity, there is no need to request approval.  A good example of this is if you wish to have a raffle within the Chapter (No outside tickets) during a meeting, no approval is needed.  If you want to use a DAV emblem, You need to ask permission of the Department, but I must also request this permission from National.  Lead time is approximately is 5 weeks from my mailing til it comes back.

DAV has a special category of non-profit status.  Most agencies are C-3 organizations, however, DAV is a C-4 organization.  If you try to get a donation from a company who wants your C-3 form tell them that we are C-4 and that they need to check with the IRS that we are approved.

Thanks for all your hard work serving the veterans of Idaho. The Commander  and I sincerely appreciate it.  Check the website often, I will use this means of communicating with you.  See you at Mid-winter, Oct 30 – 31…Get your registrations in.

A Million and One Reasons to Volunteer

There are many reasons why DAV and Auxiliary members volunteer their time and energy to help others.  Without a doubt, no matter how our members spend their time in helping others, it can be one of the most gratifying experiences of a lifetime.  From youth volunteers to someone who has been volunteering for 50 years, we can all be proud of the difference we make in the lives of sick and disabled veterans.

But we know that we must continually prepare for the future. We need to be mentors to those who will follow in our footsteps and we must actively recruit those individuals to take our place.  It is time for new volunteers to take their place as well in the effort to “build better lives for America’s disabled veterans.”   With this in mind, the Department of Veterans Affairs has produced a 12 minute video, “A million and one Reasons to Volunteer”, that will provide some background information for those thinking about getting involved in VA Volunteer Services.  You can view this video by clicking here.

If you would like a DVD version of this video please feel free to contact me at mwalsh@davmail.org.
